An Empty Room

Loneliness

A quick look at the watch: 9.12 P.M.. An acceptable delay since I'm usually the first to arrive. I ring the bell, the door almost seems to open by itself. I enter and say hello… to whom? Like if there’s someone here. I go to the living room, there’s a little table with many presents, who knows who brought all these gifts, there’s only me here. Whatever, I put mine in an empty spot and I get close to the tables. I take something to eat, pour myself a drink and I put myself in a corner looking at this empty room. The noise all around me left me confused: music, people talking, laughing, some weird noise from time to time. Where do these sounds come from? And why play music if there’s no one listening to it?

I stand there while the notes are dispersed in the air.  Sometimes I hear some greetings, I greet back, even if I don’t see anyone. Some small talk with these vague voices coming from nowhere. Sometimes I try to smile, a laugh maybe, it is still a party, the circumstance requires it even if there’s no one to see me.

I’m tired and I sit hoping that these voices are able to keep me company somehow. Even though I keep wondering how there can be so much chaos in an empty room. Well, I'm here now, it seems unkind to go away so soon and I still hope that someone arrives to finally fill this void, even if the chances are lower every minute that passes. At a certain point there is some turmoil around the gifts. Some of them are being opened and the voices are filled with amazement. Even my present is being opened. Someone thanks me… I don’t think that a voice will make anything out of those gifts.

A quick look at the watch: 11:47 P.M.. If someone had to arrive, they should be here at this time. I get up, I say goodbye, even if I’m not sure who I’m talking to. I take all my belongings and approach the door. I turn around to look one last time to all those people moving frantically following the music rhythm… How can a room with so many people be so empty?

I walk out.

I'm  a Game Design student with a programmer background and a big passion for stories. I think I can make good use of my skill to fulfill a narrative designer role.

When I write a story I try to focus not only on characters and events but also on what I' willing to communicate through the story. A message, an emotion or a specific sensation, I like to try different ways to tell stories to people.
