Scarecrawls are hideous and fearful entities that haunt crop fields and farms.

By possessing scarecrows they try to surprise their victim from behind, often using crows as a diversion.

They usually don’t move at all, but when they fall from their support pole they start crawling toward their prey trying to pull them on the ground with them and vomiting the black matter on them.

When discovered they tend to move to another host (aka another scarecrow) if there is any.

Fire is their worst enemy, but when burned, they tend to get mad entering a bloodthirsty rage state.

Physical Description

These dark entities are like a gas-liquid black essence that takes control of scarecrows.

Some of the sign of the possession that could be seen on a possessed scarecrow are:

• A black mass, part liquid part gas, that comes out of the broken parts of the scarecrow;

• While the scarecrow is intact it could be hard to identify the Scarecrawl.

• Crows are not scared anymore;

• On the scarecrow appears a frightening grin.

Boss Fight

The Scarecrawl has a variety of different attack types, and much like the other bosses, also has a frenzy mode.

Black scrape

A melee attack  which is performed when the prey gets too close to the possessed scarecrow. The sight of the prey becomes temporarily obfuscated.

Crows flock

A flock of crows comes flying on the prey, pecking and hurting him, obfuscating his sight during the attack.

Black breath

A melee attack which is performed when the Scarecrawl pull its prey on the ground. It pukes on their face some black matter which will intoxicate them giving a poisoning effect and doing lots of damage.

Change of Host

When discovered or when the possessed scarecrow gets destroyed, the Scarecrawl will move to another available host.

Frenzy Mode

The Scarecrawl enters this mode when the host gets on fire, when there is not any more host available or when it reaches ¼ of its health.

If the Scarecrawl enters this mode with more than ¼ of its health, its health will be reduced to ¼.

The Scarecrawl will hunt the prey crawling toward them. If it reaches them, it will pull them on the ground and use the Black breath.

Strengths

• Many attacks cause the hunter ‘s sight to become obfuscated;

• It changes host pretty fast; the hunter has to hit it before it moves;

• In frenzy mode it is fast and does a lot of damage.

Weaknesses

• Weak to fire;

• Destroying available hosts will block it from changing it.

Unlocking

Unlocking the subsequent entries requires the following:

• Locate Scarecrawl’s Lair;

• Kill 5 Scarecrawls;

• Banish 15 Scarecrawls;

• Kill 25 Scarecrawls;

• Extract the Bounty from 50 Scarecrawls;

• Earn 50 Cleansweeps including the Bounty from the Scarecrawls.

Researcher's insight into the Scarecrawl

The first appearance of this being has been reported just a few months ago, but during my research I came to the conclusion that they’ve been here longer than we thought.

In the last few years, disappearances of people, especially children, in corn fields in Louisiana have increased exponentially and more and more are being reported these days.

A peculiar case is the one that happened during an annual corn festival. A huge maze was built at the centre of a local farmer field and many people entered trying to find the way out.

That day 8 people, of which 5 children, 1 woman and 2 men have disappeared.

Another case that caught my attention is that of the Hebert family. 3 of their children disappeared into the field and the father, in desperation, decided to burn the entire field just to have a chance to find at least the remains of his kids. Nothing was found unfortunately for him but the disappearances ended that day.

From what we were able to observe, and from what the information given by the few survivors, these Scarecrawls are not, as we believed at first, creatures resembling a scarecrow. On the contrary, they are a black and dark essence that takes control of these inanimate hosts bringing them to life.

Their behavior is much similar to that of a parasite. They need an unharmed host to keep living, they move from one to another to keep living and they cannot survive long on their own.

Since the best way to get rid of them is to destroy the host, we can easily assume that fire is one of the best weapons to deal with them.

Witnesses said that when exposed to fire, these parasites are not able to move to another host and start chasing their prey trying to get at them before the host gets irremediably destroyed.

A possible reason for this weird behavior is that the Scarecrawls suffer from damages made on their hosts and when the damage is too high, they would die immediately if they tried to leave.

For that reason they start chasing for a living human being to possess.

The question now is, what would happen if a human is used as host for one of these parasites? Should we try a way to make some experiments? Or maybe it is better to keep this mystery unsolved? We’ll see what future encounters will unveil about them, hoping to not discover something even more terrifying…

Interview of Owen Hebert  Sr.

Interviewer: Mr. Hebert, let’s start from the beginning, what happened on the 4th of June?

Owen: It was a normal day, or at least that's what I thought when I woke up…my wife got up early, like usual. When I came down the stairs, breakfast was already on the table and my kids were already eating. We were all together… all my children… why god, why!

I: I know it’s hard Mr. Hebert but you must keep going, what time did you notice your son was missing?

O: In the morning they used to help me on the fields. Jake and Luke, the twins, had to go to the city to buy a couple of things at the local market, so they left early. Owen Jr., he's the youngest, wanted to help me with the harvest. I lost sight of him for just a second, just a second! What a horrible, horrible father I am! I will never forgive myself, and my wife was destroyed and, and…

I: What happened next, once you lost sight of him?

O: I heard screaming. I called him. He didn’t answer. But something was moving in the wheat. I run, as fast as I could, I searched everywhere but I couldn't find anything… I reached the scarecrow, hoping that Junior, seeing it above the plants, would have moved toward it to let me find him easily… but nothing. There was just a piece of his shirt that must have been ripped off when he got caught… nothing else. I still hear the screaming every night… but worse than that, the rigid and terrifying silence that followed. Something evil was there, we got punished for our sins, I tell you, it’s the Devil's work!

I: I’m sorry to ask but we need to hear about the others…

O: I…I… I can’ t, I really can't… I’m sorry, I…

I: It’s ok, let’s take a little pause, drink some water and have some sleep. We will continue this conversation tomorrow.

Interview of Evelyn Landry Hebert

Interviewer: Talk to me about your husband.

Evelyn: My husband, he was a simple man. Hard work, good father, everyone in the city knew him. He was a good person that made some stupid mistakes.

I: What mistakes? You don’t believe in what he says?

E: About the devil? Maybe, I don’t know, dark things have happened, things that not even in my darkest nightmares could have been realized. But… I’m not sure…

I: We’ll get back to that later, what about your sons?

E: My sons… my beautiful and kind and gentle sons. I loved them… more than anything else in the world. I… I was… A mother should not outlive her children! What did I do to deserve this? What sins could be so horrible to justify this atrocity!

I: And your daughter?

E: I don’t want to talk about her.

I: Why not?

E: She’s… changed. Since the accident.

I: But she survived, right? Is she harmed?

E: Yes she survived, and no, she’s not harmed, well she has some burns, but nothing dangerous. The fact is, something is different about her: she does not smile, she does not talk, she… I’m just scared.

I: Are you scared for her or are you scared of her?

E: Both… It is not her fault! She should not have been caught in that! It was his mistake! He shouldn't have done that! He should not have…

I: Do you want to talk about your husband's mistake?

E: He… he lost his mind… When all of them… first Owen Jr. then Jake and Luke… he could not stand it… he blamed himself, he was going crazy, he wanted to eradicate evil from our home and so…

I: So?

E: He burned it, he burned it all. The fields, the crops… the scarecrows.

June 28th

Interview of Owen Hebert Sr.

Interviewer: Let’s talk about the twins.

Owen:...

I: I know it is hard, but we have to get to the bottom of this.

O: yes… the twins… We were devastated, everyone was searching for Junior, everyone except Jake and Luke.

I: Why not?

O: I forbade it. It was too dangerous. They were mad at me, they wanted to help, but I couldn’t risk losing them too… and then… a week passed, they decided to disobey me. They broke out their window and, god knows why, they started running toward the fields. Marie, my daughter, saw them. But when she told me what was happening it was already too late. We heard shots, they had taken my shotgun, but when I reached them, they were gone, and the weapon was on the ground.

I: Where did you find them?

O: It was the same place…

I: The same place where you found Owen?

O: Yes, in front of that scarecrow. It was so creepy. I couldn’t look at it, that grim smile… It seemed like it was looking at me. And the crows couldn’t stop flying over its head. I thought “What is the use of those things if they can’t even do the only things they're supposed to do?”. I had not yet realized…

I: Realized what?

O: Realized that it was all its fault.

Notes of the Sheriff on the crime scene

I reached the house when the fire was almost out. The air was imbued with the smell of burned wheat and a big cloud of black smoke was lifting from the Herbert’s grounds. Mr Herbert, Owen Herbert,  was in front of the house, sittin on the porch with his head between his hands. He was murmuring something incomprehensible and moving frantically back and forth with his body.

Miss Evelyn Landry Hebert was inside, the daughter Marie was on the couch. She had some burns on her arms and legs, but they did not seem serious. She was unconscious and her mother was crying over her still body.

She told me what happened, she said that Mr Herbert got completely mad, he said that the fields were haunted and something about scarecrows and devils.

He went out and set fire to the crops. Only at that moment, he noticed that his daughter was missing, he saw something moving on the field and started running through it.

She does not know what happened, but after a while he got back, with his daughter in his arms, unconscious. He left her on the couch, and got to the porch. He has been there for a couple of hours.

I tried to talk to Mr Herbert, but he didn’t make much sense, he mumbled something about crows and fire. The fields were burned to the ground and there was nothing left of the crops. I noticed that on his left leg Mr Herbet got a huge wound, a fresh one. Looked like a wild beast scratch.

June 29th

Interview of Owen Hebert Sr.

Interviewer: Tell me about June 26th.

Owen: We searched everywhere… all my children were missing, my wife cried all day, I was desperate. I haven’t slept for days, time stopped making any sense, day and night were all the same. I walked through those fields so long that I could have done it blinded. I found nothing. But there was something strange.

I: What was it?

O: The scarecrows. I don’t know, they seemed different. I got the feeling they were looking at me, and moving… My wife said that it was a hallucination caused by my lack of sleep . But I

Got obsessed with that. I started walking from one scarecrow to another, trying to see if they changed somehow. And they did! I’m sure of it! They were making fun of me, they were trying to make me look like a fool! An evil force was at work! A DEVIL!

I: What happened next?

O: I took my decision, the devil had to be eradicated from my house. I took a torch, and I burned my fields. But then… Then I noticed. A flock of birds around one of the scarecrows… the same one where…

I: The same place where you found your children?

O:... yes… I took my shotgun, I ran through the field and reached the scarecrow, which was already on fire. It was terrifying: all the birds stopped, they were looking at me, and the scarecrow too. On the ground, my daughter. I got closer, slowly, and those birds started attacking me! I shot randomly and I think I hit the scarecrow… that’s when… it moved.

I: The scarecrow?

O: Yes, he fell down the pole, and started chasing me. I tried to run but he grabbed my leg.

I: That’s when you got that wound?

O: Yes, I think so, I didn’t notice at first. I was only thinking about killing that thing. I shot, again, and again, and again. The scarecrows were pushed back by the force until more fire reached it and burned it completely after a terrifying lament. I grabbed my daughter, and ran back to the house.

I: Ok, I think we got a clear picture of what happened. Do you want to add something else, Mr Hebert?

O: This is no problem to mess around with. The devil is here! Evil forces are corrupting our country! There is nowhere to run! There is nowhere to hide! We… are doomed.
